Rolls Royce R engine

Ronald W Harker, The Engines were Rolls Royce, Macmillan 1979

Rolls Royce "R" aviation engine on the test stand. This motor powered the British Schneider Cup contestants and was the direct ancestor of the Merlin engine. It was designed and built in 3 months in 1929 and tested at 1545 hp immediately. Two weeks later it was up to 1800 and on race day produced 1900. Further development ( and tetraethyl lead in the fuel) brought the power up to 2300 for 1931 and later to an amazing 2783 hp.
 Earplugs a must.
